The Science Based Targets initiative has approved our short‑term emission reduction targets

The international Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved Aspo’s short‑term emission reduction targets. The targets are aligned with the latest scientific research and the global 1.5‑degree pathway. Aspo’s climate targets cover ESL Shipping and Telko.

We aim to reduce our absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2030. In addition, we require that 50% of our suppliers of purchased goods and services commit to the Science Based Targets initiative by 2029. Aspo will also reduce the Scope 3 emissions arising from the transport of fossil fuels by 100% by 2030 (baseline year 2023).

Investments in sustainable shipping

Investments in sustainable shipping ESL Shipping is investing significantly in an environmentally friendly fleet. The total value of the investment, to be implemented between 2024 and 2028, is approximately EUR 186 million, and it will be used to acquire four new fully fossil-free cargo vessels. These vessels represent the latest technology in the Baltic Sea region and significantly reduce Aspo’s carbon footprint. ESL Shipping’s CO₂e emissions per tonne of cargo decreased by more than 12% in 2024.

Bio-based plastics and emission-reducing lubricants

Telko provides its customers with more sustainable and responsible options, including bio-based plastics, to replace fossil plastics. Telko also offers lubricants that have a long change interval and help improve the efficiency of wind turbines and vessels, among other applications. In industrial chemicals, Telko’s range includes additives that significantly reduce the processing temperature in the manufacture of asphalt, and thereby reduce emissions throughout the value chain.

Less food waste

Leipurin supports its customers’ sustainability goals with a sustainable product range and transparent information about supply chains and product sustainability. For example, Leipurin offers RSPO-certified palm oil alternatives. In addition, Leipurin supports consumers’ sustainable choices through research and development based on plant-based proteins. In 2024, Leipurin reduced its food waste by 38%.

Aspo is joining the mission to save the Baltic Sea by partnering with the John Nurminen Foundation

The partnership with the John Nurminen Foundation aligns with Aspo’s goals to develop future maritime infrastructure and reduce the burden on water resources. ESL Shipping and Telko are also joining this mission and partnership alongside Aspo.
