Sustainable Value Creation

Aspo creates value by owning and developing its businesses sustainably and over the long term. Aspo’s businesses – ESL Shipping, Telko and Leipurin – enable future‑proof and sustainable choices for customers in various industries.

Sustainability is integrated into Aspo’s business strategy, and we report quarterly on the progress of our key sustainability targets. Our businesses aim to be forerunners in sustainability in their field of business.

Every investment decision is carefully assessed to ensure it supports the Group’s sustainability ambitions – from the perspectives of climate, personnel and good governance. For example, in acquisitions, we evaluate target companies also from a sustainability perspective as part of the due diligence process, assessing the maturity of their existing practices and key metrics.

Significant investments to drive the green transition in industry

ESL Shipping is a frontrunner in sustainability and is making significant investments in energy‑efficient, next‑generation vessels. Currently, ESL Shipping is running two major investment programmes:

  • 12 Green Coaster vessels (for the subsidiary AtoBatC Shipping AB)

  • 4 Green Handy vessels

ESL Shipping plays a key role in enabling its customers’ green transition, as next‑generation transport solutions significantly reduce emissions from marine logistics.

ESL Shipping’s minority shareholders are OP Suomi Infra and the pension insurance company Varma.

SBTi‑Validated emission reduction targets

In 2025, both Aspo and ESL Shipping set science‑based emission reduction targets and prepared transition plans for achieving them. The targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement and the global 1.5‑degree pathway.

Aspo’s short‑term targets, as well as ESL Shipping’s short‑ and long‑term (Net Zero) targets, are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
